“The sandy glaciofluvial to glaciolacustrine succession contains exceptional sediments: two levels with SSDS and a sandy-silty two-layer complex with numerous embedded clasts of unconsolidated sandy silt. The two deformed levels are laterally extensive, and the abundant SSDS point to repeated phases of deformation. This can suggests that the sediments were most likely affected by seismic shocks (and aftershocks) that resulted from postglacial (probably post-Odranian) glacioisostatic rebound of the crust of the Earth”.

“An extraordinary variation of plastic and brittle deformation structures with periglacial, glaciotectonic and seismic features was observed within the unconsolidated, upper Pleistocene meandering river succession in the Slinkis outcrop in central Lithuania. To our knowledge, this is the first description and analysis of the combined presence of such a diverse range of deformation features caused by three trigger mechanisms in a meandering fluvial sedimentary succession”.

“We suggest the following criteria to recognize deformations and sediments of seismic-origin in glaciolacustrine fans: sandwich-like layers with SSDS, density inversion in sediments with load structures and flame structures caused by liquefaction, liquefaction-induced structures, the coexistence of plastic and brittle deformations in a single lithofacies (sediment without lithological and rheological differences), the coexistence of contractional and extensional faults, the coexistence of upright buckle folds and domino-like geometry reverse faults, and the coexistence of folds with variably oriented axial surfaces in a single lithofacies. Moreover, the next three criteria support the glacioisostatic rebound origin: proximity to faults in the bedrock, the area affected by the loading and unloading cycles of an ice sheet, and contemporary earth tremors in the vicinity of the studied site”.

 

The grounding structure and the related sedimentary characteristics (including SSDS of the bottom sediment of the lake in which the ice raft grounded) have been described.

SSDS accompanying dropstone and dumpstone have been described from a Weichselian proglacial lake deposits.

“Two seismites within a glaciolacustrine succession that is capped by a late Weichselian (Last Glacial Maximum; MIS-2) till, we conclude that earthquakes with magnitudes of>4.5 occurred in NE Germany just prior to the direct glaciation of the area during the main ice advance of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum. We attribute this to a shock-wise down-warping of the Earth’s crust under the influence of the increasing load by the advancing ice mass. The migrating moat induced elastic stress at pre-existing faults, which was released by fault re-activation. This implies that earthquakes did accompany not only ice retreat, as hitherto assumed, but also ice advance. This sheds new light on the response of the Earth’s crust to the geologically exceptionally fast alternations of significant loading and unloading by advance and retreat of continental ice sheets, respectively”.

“The deposits of both cohesive, clast-rich debris flows and intermediate clast-rich debris flows are present in the fan. Some debrites, deposited by debris flows that started in the middle part of the fan, may represent reactivated debrites. Reactivation is indicated by an increased thickness of the some debrites in the middle and distal parts of the fan, suggesting piling up of debrites, and by their more sandy lithology (in compare to the proximal part). The type of debris flow influenced the occurrence and characteristics of the soft sediment clasts (SSC). The transport distance influenced the shape and degree of deformation of SSC: the most contorted (occasionally rolled-up) SSC and the most rounded intact SSC occur in the distal part of the fan. Two trigger mechanisms might be held responsible for the debris flows on the described subaqueous fan: the instability of the slope caused by the high sedimentation rate, and seismic shocks related to the glacio-isostatic rebound”.

 

“Results of our investigation suggest the glaciotectonic processes as an alternate formational factor that may have caused pebble fracturing in sediments located within glaciofluvial sediments. Therefore, the occurrence of ruptured pebbles in a study site alone should not be treated as an unequivocal indicator of active tectonic processes”

„Earthquake-triggered seismic wave propagation can induce liquefaction of water-saturated unconsolidated fine-grained clastic sediments. To propose a seismic origin of the layer, it should meet recognition criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to provide (1) a lithofacies analysis of the sediments in the studied section; (2) a detailed description of deformation structures; (3) identification of structures that could have been formed during a liquefaction process; (4) a subsurface geological structure recognition, particularly the presence and activity of faults; (5) discussion and elimination of all other possible triggers that could have caused sediment deformation; (6) estimation of the age of the deformation”.

“The upward intrusion of silty sand into the granodiorite’s bottom part must be ascribed to liquefaction of the layer just below the boulder, as the intrusion starts from this siltysandy layer. Overpressure induced liquefaction is commonly caused by the increasing weight of a thickening overburden. Here it seems more likely, however, that the trigger was a locally suddenly increased vertical pressure exerted by the local and sudden deposition of a considerable amount of gravel and matrixmaterial”.

“Sections near Valmiera and Rakuti, of about 7 m and 4.5 m high, respectively, contain a relatively large number of deformed layers: 7 and 12, respectively. These deformed layers occur sandwiched between undeformed layers. The layers cannot represent slumps or other forms of mass transport, considering the type of deformations, their lateral extent, their constant thickness, and their granulometric similarity with the under- and overlying sediments. Neither can the deformations be ascribed to endogenic tectonics, considering the fact that most of the layers have not been deformed. Considering that the deposits were formed during retreat of the ice at the end of the last ice age, and considering that such a retreat implies glacial rebound of the Earth crust and that this rebound has resulted in earthquake-triggered seismites in other countries around the Baltic Sea, it must be deduced that the deformed layers under study represent seismites formed by shock-wise rebound of the Earth crust”.
